The Mobile Data Management Tool Kit (DMTK), the product of more than three years of study and development by officers of the UK fire and rescue services, was unveiled at the Fire Service College on 11-12 November 2003. The DMTK addresses the problem of providing role-based information, graded by its moment of need (time-lined), to officers in fire and special service situations. It is currently being made available to all UK members of CACFOA, particularly project officers, when implementing or upgrading fire and rescue service mobile data systems. However, the toolkit has the capability to assess and manage the data requirements of any role in any organisation and is recognised as being of national and international importance. In 1996, when mobile data systems for fire and rescue services were being proposed, the focus was often on the hardware. Those seeking to purchase mobile data systems would be advised to populate databases with existi-ng informatio―often held as tactical risk plans in text formats. Those documents could be supplemented by third-party chemical risk databases, mapping and published brigade procedures.
