US fire sprinkler technology has advanced a great deal over the last 20 years. Gone forever are the days of pipe-schedule sprinkler systems. This simplistic 'one size fits most' engineering approach was considered innovative 75 years ago when it was first introduced, but has now been rendered obsolete by the personal computer (pc). Fire sprinkler engineering has flourished in the last two decades as a direct result of the widespread availability of pcs. The nearly universal ability of contractors to design sprinkler systems using hydraulic calculations opened previously unimagined avenues of creative application. This phenomenon is what subsequently inundated the US sprinkler industry with so many new design approaches and their supporting hardware.
