As a charitable member of the Firefighters' Memorial Charitable Trust Fund, the Institution of Fire Engineers (IFE) wholly supports its work. The Firefighters' Trust, as it is commonly referred to, was set up in 1990 and is perhaps best known for establishing the national memorial to firefighters killed on duty and the international service of remembrance for them, held annually in London each September. While the memorial was originally intended to recognise the ultimate sacrifice of firefighters during the Second World War, the names of colleagues killed on duty in peacetime have also been added. The Trust is also responsible for the chapel at the Fire Service College in Moreton in Marsh, Gloucestershire, and the firefighter memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum in Alrewas, Staffordshire. Discussions are currently taking place to explore the establishment of additional appropriate memorials in Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland.
