摘要

I've been following the Fire Brigades Union's never ending public statements on the firefighter strikes with interest. I really have to question their leadership on this one, as these strikes won't have put any fear up the government at all. They've now cancelled the second strike, despite not actually having any written guarantees. If members are going to strike for their rights, then actually do so in a way where the government is forced to sit up and take heed, just like the strike over a decade ago. It's clear to me that the FBU took the first opportunity to avoid a second strike due to fear of public opinion. My bet is on the government stringing this out and the union getting nothing tangible in return. If this is the case, the FBU must have the strength to take stronger industrial action to force the government's hand, rather than trying to garner headlines with flippant comments.
