The control room is, as its name suggests, at the centre of a site's operations. As such, it is commonly associated with the concept of centralised management over a range of integrated equipment and resources that are deployed by organisations to tackle emergencies on site. It is here that a combination of manpower and technology can be coordinated to their full effect during critical events. Detection and response to an impending emergency are not the only roles involving control room operators, for these staff can also play a vital part in preventing situations from developing into emergencies from the outset. To help achieve this, as will be explained, it is crucial that steps are taken to enable the operators to fulfil these essential tasks.
