In the opening session of the seminar,'High rise -not high risk; London fire commissioner Ron Dobson CBE revealed that unprecedented growth in the number of high-rise buildings in London is driving effective fire safety management strategies. He explained that London contains 1,500 buildings over 12 floors and Europe's tallest building. A further 12 buildings over 100m are under construction. The City of London and central London have the highest concentration of high-rise buildings. In high-rises - typically buildings of six or more floors - external firefighting is often not possible. From conventional tower block social housing to innovative multi-use buildings such asThe Shard, they all contain a rising main, a firefighting shaft and one or more fire lifts.
