Manufacturers vary methods to incorporate FVIR technology

Spill gasoline in front of your old, gas-fired water heater and you're in trouble, right? Gasoline vapors drawn into the combustion chamber are likely to be ignited and flash back to the spill. You potentially have a sizable fire to extinguish and, worst of all, you could still be standing in the middle of the spilled fuel because the event happened so fast. Scenarios like this occur numerous times each year — about 800 times, with five people dying as a result, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). Manufacturers, however, are now producing a new type of water heater, called a flammable vapor ignition resistant (FVIR) water heater, aimed at minimizing hazardous situations.
