Selaginella horizontalis (C. Presl) Spring: More Than a Weedy Lycophyte Species

Selaginella, the most diverse group of lycophytes worldwide with about 700-800 species, has a long evolutionary history, and is one of the oldest lineages of vascular plants alive today. The origins of these plants go back to ca. 330-350 million years ago (Banks, 2009). This cosmopolitan genus is mostly distributed in the tropical and subtropical regions of the world; however, the greatest diversity of Selaginella occurs in lowland to montane rainforests.
