New company planning English Channel service

A recently established UK company, HighSpeedFerries, has said that it is undertaking preliminary work on the possible introduction in 2012 of a passenger/vehicle ferry service between Portland, Dorset, and the French port of Cherbourg.There are currently no ferries operating out of Portland's harbour, a former naval port. HighSpeedFerries' route would be the shortest across the Western English Channel. The company estimates that the journey time would be about 2 hours and two or three daily return crossings would be scheduled during the peak summer season. The company says that it would carry passengers and cars but no trucks.Condor Ferries operates Incat 86m wavepiercing catamarans between Wey-mouth, a town 2 miles north of Portland, and the Channel Islands and between the Channel Islands and St. Malo, which is 72 miles southwest of Cherbourg.
