Shipping acts to beat SARS

Ship owners and operators have cancelled shore leave for crew serving on vessels calling at some Asian ports, suspended crew hiring in China and other Far East countries and restricted executive travel and crew changeovers to prevent the contraction and spread of the deadly lung infection, Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). Within the cruise sector, some lines at ports in North America have even refused to board passengers who have recently travelled to at-risk areas named by the World Health Organization (WHO), even if they have no symptoms of the disease.
