Shipbreakers in Alang, once the world's largest ship demolition yard, are at a loss. As Alang-Sosiya has slipped to third position after Bangladesh and China in terms of tonnage demolished, hundreds of units have shut down. This has left more than 20,000 direct employees jobless, while 30 units employing 5,000 remain operational. Shipbreakers told Fairplay that this dramatic decline was caused by an understanding between the outgoing national government and the Steel Alliance, an industry association made up of the top five producers: Tata Steel, Steel Authority of India (Sail), Essar Steel, Jindal Steel and Lloyds Steel.
