The Genoese shipbroking company Burke & Novi has dignity and a conservative air about it that belies its comparative youth. The partnership with Giovanni Novi was formed only in 1961. But like a hybrid rose, its trunk and roots go deeper. The story begins at the start of the 20th century. Enrico Burke's great-grandfather Sir John Burke served as Italy's consul-general in Belfast. Wishing one of his sons to take over the Italian connection in Ireland, he sent his 21-year-old son Edmund to Genoa to learn Italian.
