Intertanko meets in troubled times

There was a subdued but earnest mood at the meeting in Tokyo of independent tanker owners' body Intertanko, which concluded on 15 May. In the face of a freight market close to historic lows, chairman Nicholas Fistes, who was re-elected by the organisation's council for a further term, said tanker owners and operators must continue to face up to the challenges of improving safety and quality.rnAs an organisation, Fistes said Intertanko is gradually moving "into a greater position of influence and trust, from where it can achieve tangible results" in ensuring fair and workable regulation of the tanker industry. Some of its influence can be attributed to its growing size, as Intertanko recently achieved a record of 270 members, which collectively control more than 3,100 tankers of over 250M dwt.
