Latin America preps for 2014 cargo rush

South American ports are now gearing up to handle the larger ships that will transit the region following the 2014 expansion of the Panama Canal. That was the driving theme at the recent American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA) Congress held in Lima, Peru. The potential of Peru itself took centre-stage. Peru's minister of transport Enrique Cornejo told the AAPA conference that his country has now "gained its position among the 'port countries'".
