Container lines seek out emerging markets business

Ultra-large container ships (ULCS) are becoming a mainstay on Asia-Europe and trans-Pacific lanes and this has offered opportunities for mid-sized ships in emerging markets. Carriers are transferring post-Panamax ships from major long-haul routes into services to the Middle East and Latin America. Credit Suisse analyst Sam Lee said the Asia-Middle East and Asia-Latin America distances and volumes would boost tonne-miles and absorb vessel capacity in the industry, which faces both slowing demand in the US and Europe and 350,000teu of ULCS deliveries.
