Rufus Lekala has been appointed South Africa's Chief Harbour Master, effective as of 1 June 2011. He replaces Captain Mike Brophy, who has been in the post since 2005 and is now retiring. At 41, Lekala is the world's youngest person to take on this role, and in South Africa he is the first Chief Harbour Master of colour. Speaking to Fairplay about the changes he expects in his new position, Lekala, who is currently the Port of Durban's harbour master, said: "This role will put me in charge of seven ports and will involve strategic thinking about port policy - you are no longer making forecasts for just one port."
