Why Cyprus needs a strong maritime cluster

In 2009 the Republic of Cyprus military removed 98 containers of munitions from the general cargo vessel Monchegorsk, which was en route from Iran to Syria. These containers were stored at the Evangelos Florakis Naval Base a few miles along the coast from Limassol, but no plan was made to make the shipment safe. On 11 July last year, after two years sitting in the Mediterranean sun, the gunpowder and nitroglycerin caused one of the largest conventional weapons blasts on record.
