Since the economic meltdown began following the bankruptcy of investment bank Lehman Brothers in 2008. the shipping industry has experienced a perfect storm. Freight rates and ship values have declined significantly and traditional shipping banks - mostly European banks that have been the major source of finance for the shipping industry - have exited the market or scaled down lending activity.
