Productivity increase 'essential'

Increasing productivity at container terminals is essential to meet customer demand, believes Soren Sjostrand Jakobsen, head of project implementation at APM Terminals (APMT). Better productivity brings benefits to the shipping lines that serve them, he said at the Future Ports conference in Stockholm in late April. He referred to Maersk Line's Triple-E ships to illustrate his point: they have 16% more capacity than the PS class but are the same length. "This means crane intensity, and therefore berth productivity, will remain the same on these larger vessels unless we change the game."
