Speculation that Japan's three major operators might combine their container shipping businesses has been rejected by MOL chief executive Koichi Muto and 'K' Line's CEO Jiro Asakura. Merger talk was prompted by a Macquarie Securities report that suggested it would be better for the majors to combine their box activities to form a 'Japan Line' that could compete with bigger players.
