Addressing International Salvage Union (ISU) members at the organisation's annual meeting in March, Michael Kelleher, director in charge of West P&I Club's claims management division (UK) said official intervention in salvage operations "should be reasonable and proportionate. Several cases were unreasonable and disproportionate." He was referring to a 2002-12 review published by the International Group of P&I Clubs' large casualty working group last month. This found "high-level intervention" to be a common feature (in 16 out of 20 casualties), and that costs were higher where there was such involvement.
