London and Liverpool, two UK ports seemingly in long-term decline after once being among the greatest ports in the world, have gained a new lease of life by retrofitting for the 21 st century. In the era before cheap air travel, when the fastest way to America was by trans-Atlantic liner, Liverpool was at its zenith as a global port. Also a great trading centre of the British Empire, it was inferior only to London, claiming a major share of commerce with Britain's overseas colonies in the Americas and Caribbean.
