When the new International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships' Ballast Water and Sediments was adopted by the IMO in February the need for technology capable of treating ballast water was highlighted once again. The Convention allows for retaining the current management measures for ballast water exchange at sea for the foreseeable future but also provides for continuous improvement by setting standards to stimulate the development of alternative, more effective management measures over time. The potential solution developed by British company Pursuit Dynamics uses conventional steam energy but in a revolutionary way.
