Heavyweight boxers shape up: Samsung and Hyundai fight for the 8000 TEU class crown

Given South Korea's announced intention to concentrate on high value ships it should come as no surprise that it has rapidly taken an undisputed lead in the booming construction of container vessels in the new 8,000 TEU class. At this moment, more than 100 vessels capable of carrying 8,000 plus TEU - whether declared as such by their owners or not - are on order. Not counting Odense Steel Shipyard as the exclusive supplier of the prominent 109,000 dwt Axel Maersk-type to AP Moller, there are only the South Korean yards of Samsung, Hyundai, Hanjin and Daewoo and Japan's IHI currently engaged in building container vessels of this size. The various designs with deadweights around 100,000dwt have reported container intakes of between 7,600 and 8,400TEU apart from the largest Maersk vessels which the owners have unaccountably downgraded to an advertised 6,600TEU capacity. The 100,000dwt mark is only expected to be substantially superseded by the 9,600TEU ships ordered at Samsung for employment by China Shipping Container Line.
