Operators have the choice between two main design philosophies when they opt for a ship type intended to transport heavy cargo units. While some traditional heavy-lift operators, such as Jumboship, BigLift or Scanscot, favour purpose-developed vessel types with distinguishing characteristics, such as forward superstructures or ro-ro facilities, there is also the possibility of creating a heavy-lift carrier by fitting a reliable general cargo type with strong cargo gear. When heavy lift shipping started this was the route taken by numerous pre- and post-war liner operators in their attempt to ship heavy goods along with conventional cargoes.
