Owners of a well-known brand of Scandinavian estate car will be familiar with the concept of 'crumple zones'. Lindenau, a designer and builder of tankers based in the north German town of Kiel, with a focus on safety and environment-friendly operation, thinks the concept could be advantageously extended to ships. Lindenau declined to discuss the work that it is doing with Solutions, but classification society Germanischer Lloyd, which is collaborating with Lindenau on the testing of the concept, has already provided an insight into the project in the latest issue of its house magazine Nonstop.
