GE's Power Conversion business is targeting the offshore market with Inovelis, a new generation of podded electric thrusters, as it aims to enhance its product portfolio following its 2011 take-over of Converteam. Deploying pump jet principles, the Inovelis solution offers a higher thrust capability and improved hydrodynamic efficiency relative to conventional azimuth thruster systems, greater compactness, and increased availability from GE's innovative induction motor technology. The new propulsor promises fuel savings of up to 10% over conventional azimuth propulsion and correspondingly reduced emissions, according to GE. On offshore support vessels, it is designed to offer enhanced performance and efficiency in transit and dynamic positioning (DP) modes of operation.
