DESIGN OF THE SONY CENTER ROOF, BERLIN

When Berlin was physically divided into West and East Berlin at the end of World War II, Potsdamer Platz, the old center of the city, was destroyed and, due to its proximity to the Berlin Wall, never rebuilt. But when Germany reunified in 1989, both city and federal government sponsored international competitions to renovate Berlin's buildings and rebuild its urban spaces. One of those spaces was Potsdamer Platz. In 1992, German-American architect Helmut Jahn, assisted by Ove Arup Partners USA (New York), won a design competition for Sony's European Headquarters on the western edge of Potsdamer Platz.
