The 518 West Italian Cafe project originated as an assignment for a construction systems course at North Carolina State University (NCSU). The assignment was to choose a building to analyze a structural problem and propose a solution to the problem. Our group chose to investigate the Cafe's historic framework and materials as well as its recent renovations. We chose to tackle the building's problem of overwhelming noise from patrons' conversations. The building's structure consisted of preserved load bearing brick masonry walls with hardwood flooring on the second story. Recent renovations brought in terrazzo flooring on the first floor and stucco applications on a few interior walls. Upon entry, visitors are greeted by a two story open bar room adjacent to two dining rooms with a mezzanine above. This two-story space, as well as the pervasive hard material surfaces, creates a cacophony of noise, even when the cafe is only half full.
