摘要

Climate and Large-Scale Dynamics Program, Division of Atmospheric and Geospace Sciences, Geosciences Directorate, National Science Foundation Back in 2005, a special issue of the InternationalJournal of High Performance Computing Applications (IJHPCA) was devoted to the computational science and software engineering challenges associated with the development of the Community Climate System Model (CCSM). In his preface to that special issue, Ari Patrinos, erstwhile Associate Director for Biological and Environmental Research, Office of Science, U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), challenged the research community to expand the scope of the climate model by adding new physical, chemical and biological processes; he stated "The impressive software engineering approaches developed in this special issue [...] help prepare the research community as it enters the next phase of model development towards high fidelity, high performance earth system models'.
