On May 30th this year the CSIRO celebrated an early favourable decision defending its 1996 patent covering the OFDM technology in the popular IEEE 802.11a WLAN products sold by Intel and others. What can we take from this? On April 28th this year, Nokia settled with US based InterDigital for $US253 million in disputed royalty payments on its TDMA/TDD patents of the mid 1980s. One of the issues of contention was whether Telecom Australia's DRCS system of 1980 constituted prior art!
