Could cyber crime be costing Australia $22b per year?

A UK government study into the impact of cybercrime on the UK economy has estimated the cost at ￡27b per year. Extrapolating that to Australia on the basis of our GDP relative to that of the UK would give a headline grabbing figure of around $A22b. However scrutiny of the report reveals that it has little hard evidence on which to base this figure and instead relies on a number of assumptions. The first joint Government and industry report into the extent and cost of cyber crime across the UK was prepared by the Office of Cyber Security & Information Assurance in the Cabinet Office and research firm Detica.
