The EBRD-administered Ignalina International Decommissioning Support Fund will give €2 million to studies supporting the construction of a power interconnection between Lithuania and Poland. The money will be used for financial, technical and territorial planning of the project as well as assessment of its environmental impacts. The projected transfer capacity of the transmission line is 1,000 MW. This would allow for the transmission of up to 8 TWh per year. The Baltic nations are considered as an electricity island due to their lack of interconnection with the Union for the Coordination of Transmission of Electricity (UCTE) power grid. Preliminary calculations suggest that the actual construction of the interconnection will cost some €237 million. (DAI)
