Synthetic Fuels Industry Calls For Eu Support

The synthetic fuels industry called for greater EU policy support at a workshop organised on 8 October by the Alliance for Synthetic Fuels in Europe (ASFE) as part of the Committee of the Regions' Open Days. The organisation argues that cleaner synthetic fuels made from biomass (BTL), natural gas (GTL) or coal (CTL) can "significantly" contribute to reducing exhaust emissions in urban areas. They also can help combat global warming and reinforce Europe's energy security. However, there is a need for political and fiscal support from the EU as well as national policymakers. Specific demands by the industry include increased support, notably for general R&D, BTL production pathways, advanced engines and injection systems optimised around synthetic fuels as well as agriculture and BTL production. "Synthetic fuels need an effective EU policy framework to help increase their development and market penetration. National governments and local authorities should support the introduction of synthetic fuels through fiscal measures and other support," said Eric van der Wateren from Sasol Chevron.
