Commission appeals to airlines' goodwill

Having a wheelchair damaged or lost during a flight can ruin an entire trip and complicate the life of people with reduced mobility for some time. A recent study shows that airports and airlines take too much time to resolve practical problems linked with such incidents and have variable compensation policies in place. Nonetheless, it is difficult for the passengers of Community airlines to obtain compensation up to the cost of their equipment. The European Commission acknowledges the problem, but in the short term, Community legislation will not be adapted. In a communication adopted in August1, the Commission makes it known that it first hopes to see the question of total compensation for equipment settled at international level, ie within the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).
