Ngos Appeal For Rejection Of Greenland's Request

Several environmental organisations, including the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society, the World Society for the Protection of Animals, the WWF and the Pew Environment Group have appealed to the responsible European ministers to instruct their representatives within the International Whaling Commission (IWC), whose 60th annual meeting was held from 26 to 30 June in Santiago, Chile, to reject a request by Greenland to increase its hunting quota to ten humpback whales in Community waters. Greenland, whose request is supported by Denmark, justifies its call for an increase in the hunting quota - granted according to IWC rules on the means of subsistence of indigenous populations - by the fact that its population needs 730 tonnes of whale meat per year and that the current quota is insufficient. According to NGOs, member states should vote in a consistent manner and could support Greenland.
