Energy-climate Package And Gmos Top Ministers' Agenda

The French government has made the energy-climate package its top priority. So it comes as no surprise that this issue was the focus of the informal meetings in Paris of both the EU's environment ministers (3-4 July) and energy ministers (4-5 July - see page 11). The participants in the two Councils came together for a working lunch on the subject on 4 July. The environment ministers also resumed the discussion launched at the request of the French delegation, at the last Environment Council, on the necessity of reviewing evaluation procedures for genetically modified organisms (GMOs. The 27 ministers began with an evaluation of preparation of the Conference of Parties to the United Nations Climate Convention and the Kyoto Protocol, scheduled from 2 to 12 December 2008 in Poznan (Poland). Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas briefed the ministers on the progress to date, following his meetings with the conference chair in Warsaw on 27 June.
