Poland disappoints Union bv blocking EIT decision

Late night haggling over the headquarters of the European Institute of Technology and Innovation (EIT) has made some bad blood between Poland and the other 26 EU member states. In the early hours of 30 May, Poland blocked a decision to award the EIT to the Hungarian capital, Budapest, after its own candidate, Wroclaw, failed to get enough support. Diplomats said that the Polish delegation refused to back down despite being explicitly warned that its insistence can have "repercussions". Barbara Kudrycka, the Polish sci- ence minister, reportedly said that she could not concede. "I do not have a mandate to give up from one day to another," she was quoted by diplomats.
