EP worried about financing of animal health strategy

MEPs recently adopted, by a strong majority, a report by Janusz Wojciechowski (UEN, Poland), highly in favour of the new animal health strategy proposed by the European Commission. They specify, however, that an increase in the current Veterinary Fund will be necessary and plead for the majority of financing to come from the Community. All of the following objectives of the new animal health strategy proposed by the European Commission were supported by the European Parliament: strengthening the measures of prevention, disease surveillance, controls and research in the animal health sector. Elected members even defended one of the most controversial points of this strategy: the revision of compensation rules for producers in the event of an outbreak of disease. They are in favour of incentive measures which would make it possible to favour breeders who have invested in precautionary measures as well as those who have put in place a national insurance system.
