There are "serious and persistent" problems with online sales of airline tickets. This observation, initially made after a wide investigation carried out in September 2007, is still valid today, notes a mid-term report published by the European Commission, on 8 May. The report specifically singles out misleading pricing, availability of offers and unfair contract terms. These practices concern both airlines and travel agencies. The report provides a snapshot of progress on compliance with EU legislation as of 22 February 2008, ie six months after the initial investigation. These are carried out under an EU consumer protection regulation, which sets up a network of national authorities in charge of monitoring and enforcing consumer protection legislation (Regulation 2006/2004). The air sector is the first to feel the pinch.
