Member states oppose early reopening of EU market to US chicken

France, backed by most of the EU member states, remains "concerned" over "the proposal for authorisation by the European Commission of chemical decontamination of fresh meat," which would pave the way to imports of American chicken that have undergone such treatment. In spite of reassuring messages from Health Commissioner Androula Vassiliou over the difficulty of opening up the EU market soon to American chlorine-treated chicken, Paris pointed out, at the Agriculture Council on 14 April, that recent scientific findings "have not cleared up all uncertainty" over the dangerousness of these chemical treatments.
