The European Parliament is cautious regarding the CO_2 emission reduction targets for the car sector: in a resolution adopted on 15 January, during the plenary session in Strasbourg, it proposes to postpone to 2015 the compulsory targets defined at Community level. In its proposal presented in December 2007, the European Commission set the target of bringing down the CO_2 emissions of the sector to 120g/km by 2012. The parliamentary rapporteur, the liberal German Jorgo Chatzimarkakis, convinced his colleagues that 2012 would not leave the industry sufficient time to adapt. The development of new models of cars requires about seven years, he reiterated, and the few years which will separate the text coming into force (probably not before late 2009) and 2012 would not be sufficient for the industry to adapt.
