The European Commission "took note" of the declarations by French President Nicolas Sarkozy, on 19 January, according to which it is necessary to "take a new look at the system of fishing quotas set by the European Union".rnA spokesperson for Joe Borg, the commissioner responsible for fisheries and maritime affairs, indicated, on 21 January, that the concerns thus expressed are not new, that they also affect other member states and that there is an ongoing debate between the EU and member states onrnthe different possibilities for improving the Common Fisheries Policy.rnThe CFP, which in 2002 was the object of an in-depth reform, should not be subject to a new revision for the moment. Nevertheless, nothing prevents the future French Presidency of the EU (1 July to 31 December 2008) from including the fisheries dossier among its priorities.
