The European Parliament's Transport Committee has strengthened the proposal for a regulation aimed at protecting the rights of bus and coach passengers. The proposal at issue was presented by the European Commission in November 2008 (COM(2008)817) and introduces compensation for cancelled or significantly delayed journeys, as well as providing special assistance for people with reduced mobility.rnIn adopting a report by Gabriele Alber-tini (EPP-ED, Italy), on 31 March in Brussels, the committee changed the original proposal to bring it a little more into line with what exists for compensation in the railway sector, a large competitor for buses and coaches on some routes in some countries. It suggests in particular that passengers have a right to compensation of the equivalent of 50% of the ticket price if the service is cancelled or delayed by more than two hours, and that forrnlong delays bus and coach companies are obliged to offer meals, refreshments and a night's stay in a hotel if necessary.
