EU fails to push through more drastic measures

The European Commission welcomed with "mixed feelings" the outcome of the high-level meeting of the North East Atlantic Fisheries Commission (NEAFC)', held in London from 24 to 27 March. The EU regrets that consensus failed to emerge on the ambitious plan it presented. In order to make "at least some progress," it decided to support the Norwegian proposal for the closure of a smaller number of vulnerable areas.rn"The proposed NEAFC measures can only be a first step and need to rnbe extended urgently if NEAFC is to respond to the expectations of the international community and protect vulnerable marine ecosystems in the Atlantic effectively," commented Fisheries and Maritime Affairs Commissioner Joe Borg.
