Bluefin tuna fishing season cut by 15 days

The fishing season for Mediterranean bluefin tuna opened on 16 April. In accordance with the new multiannual recovery plan for this species, adopted by the EU Council on 6 April, it has been shortened by 15 days and will consequently end on 15 June rather than 30 June for the European Community fleet. Total allowable catches (TACs) for tuna seining vessels have been reduced by nearly 3,000 tonnes.rnThese measures are part of the 2008 agreement adopted by the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT), the body in charge of managing this species worldwide. The EU regulation rnestablishing a multiannual recovery plan for bluefin tuna in the Eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean - adopted on 6 April - transposes the ICCAT agreement into Community law.
