MEPs reinforce ecolabel rules

The European ecolabel has emerged stronger from its revision process, which concluded on 2 April with a positive vote by the European Parliament. The vote endorses the compromise negotiated with the Council at first reading (co-decision). Once the Council has confirmed the agreement, the new regulation will be considered adopted. The European Consumers' Organisation (BEUC) welcomed the outcome, saying it means that the label will remain a reference of environmental excellence and quality for consumers.rnUnder the new regulation, before defining criteria for the award of the ecolabel to processed food products, the European Commission must first ensure that reliable environmental criteria can be set for such products.
