Council adopts bluefin tuna recovery plan

The EU Council of Ministers adopted, on 6 April, a regulation transposing into Community law the new multiannual recovery plan for Eastern Atlantic blue-fin tuna adopted by the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT). The Union will thus be able to put into practice - from the start of the 2009 fishing season that opens on 15 April - its determination to apply a strict, zero-tolerance approach to implementation of the recovery plan.rnThe European Parliament had approved rnthe draft regulation under the accelerated procedure, on 12 March, at the request of the Council. Under the new regulation, total allowable catches (TACs) of blue-fin tuna for EU vessels amount to 12,406 tonnes for 2009, compared with 16,210 tonnes in 2008, and 11,237 tonnes in 2010, which represents a 30% reduction over two years.
