GMO opponents force Commission to think twice

With Germany joining the ranks of EU member states supporting a ban on Mon 810 maize on 14 April (see page 26), the failure of the forcing policy on GMOs implemented by European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso since he took office has become clear.rnThe member states want to be able to decide for themselves whether to authorise or ban the use of such seed on their territory in terms of their public opinions and their own risk assessments, given the lack of unanimity on the assessments of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).rnLike it or not, the Commission is going to have to take their aspirations into account.
