Greens prefer anyone but Barroso to head Commission

In their campaign against the reappoint-ment of Jose Manuel Barroso as European Commission president, the European Greens would even he prepared to support another EPP-ED candidate, Belgian MEP Pierre Jonckheer told journalists, on 27 March in Brussels. He was speaking in the wings of the European Green Party-congress.rnJonckheer has already had four terms in Parliament and does not intend to stand for re-election, so has no qualms about speaking his mind. The Greens debated at length the appointment of the next Commission president. It is clear that the Socialist family is incapable at this stage of appointing a candidate. It will be coining to a decision on 24 April, but its members are still very divided because the British, Spanish and Portuguese prime ministers back Barroso. The Liberals seem to be leaning towards the EPP-ED candidate, at least the European Liberal Democratrnand Reform Party, while the French party MoDem, which is a member of the European Democrat Party, is opposed.
